VPS – Weighted Scoring System

Two shooters can finish with the same number of hits without producing the same performance. Which targets were hit — and how early in the shot sequence those hits were made — can make a significant difference.

What does VPS take into account?

• target distance
• physical target size and area
• target geometry
• which shot in the sequence produced the hit
• the shooter’s total performance across the match

A first-shot hit receives a higher value than a hit made later in the sequence, while later hits still retain performance value.

This allows the result to preserve more information than a simple total number of hits.

Two shooters may both finish a match with 18 hits out of 36.

Shooter A may have hit the more difficult targets and made more of those hits early in the shot sequence.

Shooter B may have achieved the same total number of hits, but on easier targets or later in the sequence.

Their hit count is identical. Their VPS can be different.

Where the source material allows, ELR Nordic League also publishes a Target Profile showing:

This provides additional context for understanding the difficulty of the match.

For historical matches where the documentation is incomplete, only the fields that can be supported by the available source material are shown.

A higher VPS represents a stronger performance within the documented structure of the match.

It does not imply that different competitions were held under identical conditions.

Wind, light, mirage, terrain, atmospheric conditions and the ability to observe impacts can vary considerably.

VPS therefore focuses on factors that can be documented and reproduced from the match data.

Where is VPS used?

The Match Director remains responsible for the competition and its local result.

ELR Nordic League uses the verified match data to produce the common VPS result.

A Match Director may use another local scoring model, provided that the necessary match data is available so that ELR Nordic League can verify and calculate the VPS result independently.

The complete internal calculation engine is not published as part of the public website.

The objective is to make the result understandable and traceable without turning the website into a technical scoring manual.

VPS does not create more hits. It preserves more information about the hits that were actually made.
